Getting by in Russian
If you are going into Russia, the Ukraine or other Former Soviet Union countries on an intermittent basis, and you don't intend to live there for extended periods, this course is just what Doctor Zhivago ordered! Even if you are staying a while, this course is great, because it will enable you become functional in a very short time. You will be able to get food and drink, read common signs, such as rest room signs (so that you do not enter the rest room of the opposite pursuasion!), and also read the exit, entry or no smoking signs, get directions, make polite comments, such as "please" and "thank you" and "excuse me" in a very short time.

Russian at a Glance
Cultural information is interspersed throughout the vocabulary in the phrasebook section; this really kept me interested in reading further. Features I really liked: the Quick Grammar guide covers an astonishing amount of material in a mere seven pages. Essential verbs (such as "want, "can," "need," etc.) are conjugated in the dictionary section so that the average tourist can use the correct form.

A very cute introduction to Russian for children. The tape is a great idea because you can tell if you are pronouncing words and phrases correctly. It could have been improved by using traditional Russian songs instead of translated American songs. Also--I could live without the guy oversinging the songs in English. All in all, a very good way to support your child's interest in Russian language. Perfect for siblings of older children! Also Teach Me More Russian is available, a volume which continues where the first left off.
